Kokanee Salmon

Oncorhynchus nerka

Kokanee are landlocked sockeye salmon that spend their whole life in freshwater reservoirs, filter-feeding on plankton rather than striking prey aggressively. That's why trolling small, bright attractors works better than static bait, they're triggering a reaction rather than feeding response.

Typical size: 10-20in · Peak season: spring, summer. Always check current CDFW regulations for size and bag limits before keeping fish.

The sinker slides freely on the main line, so a fish can pick up bait and move off without feeling resistance. Good in heavier surf or current where a fixed weight would spook a bite.
